  What's Dys?
  Could it be Dyslexia?

Remember
To Have Your Child Checked For Dyslexia.

It’s Important.

Do you know what
Dyslexia is?

  • Dyslexia is difficulty matching letters & sounds for reading & spelling.

  • Dyslexia affects 20% of people with normal to superior intelligence.

  • Dyslexia is NOT an eye problem.

  • Dyslexia does NOT mean reading backwards.

  • Dyslexia can run in families, so think of older children and other relatives who might have had trouble in school reading or spelling. Early intervention is best.

Parents of young children should see if these common errors continue…

  • Mispronouncing words, like “aminal” (animal) or “pisghetti” (spaghetti)

  • Any difficulties learning common nursery rhymes, like “Jack & Jill

  • Any difficulties recognizing rhyming words, like ”top, hop, stop”

  • Any challenges learning names of things, colors, or following directions

  • Any challenges remembering the letters of his/her own name

Four Actual Life Experiences About Dyslexia
Can you relate?

"When Joey’s mom said he’s not sleeping well and not eating. I should have asked.”How is he was doing in school?, “How is his reading”? We would have saved a lot of time. Joey has Dyslexia. They never taught me to ask that in medical school. Now I know better. Knowing about Dyslexia makes me a better doctor."

"I give Megan a lot of 1 to 1 time. She gets taken out every day for extra help in reading. I don’t know why she is not getting it . She is so behind and her math is poor, But, when she knows an answer she is the first to raise her hand. If she does it orally she gets it right. As a teacher I really need help."

"Devon hates school. They keep calling us to come in. He has a tutor and we are doing the best we can. We are not rich. We don’t know why this is happening. He is such a smart boy. I worry about the baby. We are scared and don’t know what to do. All the advice we get just isn't working,

"I am an Education Lawyer. I work with parents to get the children the services they need. It is not always easy. Getting dyslexia help is tricky. I hope things get better soon. We are losing too many children. I have a hard job".
